City of Santa Cruz

Background

The 2016 presidential election made clear that we need to do something differently when picking our leaders. Santa Cruz City Council races haven’t been as gut-wrenching as the national election, but they do have many of the same imperfections. Local advocates formed Yes on Ranked Choice to bring the benefits of ranked choice voting (RCV) to  Santa Cruz voters. The campaign also hopes to contribute momentum to reforming the California’s Top-Two Primary election system with RCV.

As a charter city, Santa Cruz is in a unique position to lead on election reform. Join us in saying YES on RCV!

Campaign Status

We are currently working on two routes to put RCV on the city’s 2018 ballot:

  1. A citizen initiative and signature drive (approx 6,000 signatures required)

  2. Placement on the ballot by the Santa Cruz City Council. Councilmembers may vote to put RCV up to 88 days before the November election.

In 2016, election reform went from being a nice idea to an imperative. As a wiry haired genius (Albert Einstein) once said, “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity.” If we continue to conduct elections in the same way, we will continue to get the same vicious campaigns and polarized government.
